If they pass, then disable your virus protection software and proceed with the installation or update. Once complete, enable the antivirus software and perform a new scan. If all goes well you can be as sure as is possible that you are safe.

For increased virus protection, disconnect your computer from the network/internet while virus scanning is disabled. This will prevent an unexpected instant message or email from sneaking in while you are unprotected. This may not always be possible as newer software titles and operating system updates often use the internet to check for the latest and greatest version as a part of the installation. If this is the case then at least make sure all network applications such as browsers, email programs, interactive games and instant messaging are disabled.
