You might be one of the countless masses of people that are asking yourself “How do I know if a virus scan is legitimate?” Let me tell you, you do not have to worry about being taken advantage of again. For those that have not been unlucky enough to have received this message, they are basically notifications that warn of virus threats on your machine. These commonly come up while you are busy surfing the net, and visiting sites that you have not encountered yet. You will get a warning message saying that infected files were found and that you need a full scan to fix them.
Knowing how virus scans work
Since I have been asked the question “how do I know a virus scan is legitimate?” so many times, I figured that it was time to do a proper article on how to tell the real ones from the fakes ones for once, and for all. What these messages are trying to emulate is your anti-virus protective software’s defense mechanism. But most of the time, you will see that these messages do not come from the software that you have installed on your computer.
What to do when you see them “pop-up”
I would not be fully answering the question of “How do I know a virus scan is legitimate?”without telling you why they exist in the first place. They are just like any other pop up that you have encountered before. Just exit out of them, even if you have restart your browser. It is pretty common sense that if you have not installed the software that is giving the message, than it cannot be even close to legitimate in any way.
