When spam finds itself on your network, the result can be extremely painful. It may cause your systems to operate slower and you may find yourself on an anti-spam blacklist. This may be because whoever is on your network has been sending thousands of spam emails to customers in your system. As a result, your network will be clogged with unidentifiable traffic. This traffic will be the one thing that you will be looking for in order to track the spam that is on your network.
Detecting Unexplained Network Traffic
If your system is generating spam there is a large chance that it will generate network traffic. In order to find out if your system is generating unexplained traffic, you will need to shut your systems down.
Turn on all of your computers and shutdown all of the background jobs. Essentially, you will need to get rid of anything that could potentially generate network access. This job is easier to do if you only have a small network on your hands, as opposed to an entire corporation.
Once you have done this, your main router should not have any major signs of heavy traffic. If you see a lot of traffic, you may have reason for alarm. At this point, you will need to contact a professional.
Tracking the Spam on Your Network
In order to track spam, you will need a program that will help you monitor your network traffic. Many system administrators will already have tools that do this. If they do not, you will need to purchase one. As mentioned before, if you have a small network, you can easily go from computer to computer and study the network card.
Using Your Network Card
All of these cards have anywhere from one lights to three lights. These lights are there to let you know if you have a steady network connection. In addition, they can tell you if you are transmitting data. Having said this, you should be able to tell if your system is active.
